Battle Goblet

If you have seen my Battlecups then you will easily be able to see that this series is the next development of the Battlecups. They are made in terracotta earthenware paper clay and glazed with a simple oxide glaze on the outside buffed back to allow the red of the clay to show through. The inside surface has an “ADT” glaze (aka any damn thing) which is the contents of the slops bucket. This is always a great place to get complex and never to be repeated glazes. A proper vitrifying glaze was used here to seal the inside, thus making the goblet usable.

The stem of the goblet is simply three rolls of clay twisted together. Because the paperclay is homemade, it is not all that even which lends the twisted handle a bit of a texture. In later designs I made use of a three lobed extruder shape to produce a shape similar to three rolls of clay lying together that I could then twist to give the same effect for the handle and yet be stronger.

Once all parts were leather hard and able to support their own weight, they were assembled. This was where the use of paperclay really helped, by making a good strong join.

I had a few occassions where the kiln over fired which produced some slightly droopy goblets. Interesting to look at but not very useful.
